The Casa Madre Vibe

In the make believe version of the Casa Madre origin story I like to pretend that this is a property that has been run for the past 50 years by the same family.

Some Casa Madre muses: my mom center of the photo looking to the left chatting with her cousin in Mexico in the late 1950s.

Maybe originally as a mini compound for an extended family from Guadalajara. They would vacation here with their kids in the 80’s and 90’s and now the matriarch a young 70-ish year old Abuela runs it with a small team, mostly as a vacation rental to travelers looking for an alternative to cookie cutter “modern” airbnb experiences.

The furniture hasn’t changed, the landscaping has grown mature and a little wild. The tile in the bathrooms and the art on the walls was all collected and haphazardly hung by her. It is not a design hotel or airbnb but instead family home with history, memories, melodies floating thru the halls and smells of delicious meals coming from the big kitchen.

I wish there was a way for us to better communicate this to guests. We know the place is not perfect, a forever work in progress. We know it takes a beating in the summers. But it has a soul and we have gifted this place a new life just as it has for us.

So this is our desired aesthetic: old, worn, loved and rough around the edges. Things will break, services may halt for an hour or two due to the climate and our small pueblo’s abilities. But as a family home it perseveres as: unique, authentic, charming and extremely special.

Thanks for visiting and thanks for reading.
