An Origin Story

As a couple Mike and I have spent close to 15 years visiting San Pancho. We would steal away on larger family vacations and drive up North where our friend Fernanda lived. In recent years we began to casually explore real estate on our annual trips. Considering what life might be like if we could put down some roots in this small town, raise our kids, immerse ourselves in the culture, speak Spanish everyday and create a home.

In early 2020 was the first time we visited the property that would become our home. A couple who had lovingly taken care of the home for 15 years were ready for a change. We visited, toured and learned their story. How when they bought the plot it was just one humble casita and over time they evolved the space to feature a brick courtyard, fountain and two more casitas.

October 2020, the rustic studio that became Casa Padre

We immediately fell in love with the rustic yet traditional architecture. As it reminded us of the Mexican colonial towns of Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Queretaro. I imagined my Welita growing up in homes like these and chasing chickens on the cobblestones in her youth. We felt at home.

The property stood out as a space that could use some preservation and new life. While we were unsure about what we could create we were ready to give it a try.

At the end of the year, December 2020, we packed our car and officially migrated down to Mexico where we quickly began to bring our visions to life. The work here will never really be done, the project is fluid and the experience organic.

Casa Madre is more than just our Mexican home. It is part residencia or hotelito, hospitality project and creative outlet. Each season brings new projects, tasks, maintenance and opportunity. We will continue to unravel the story of creating this special place, this work in progress story for generations to come.

Thank you for visiting,

Mike y Ly
